THE DREAM PROJECT LUNCH – WEBINAR
The DREAM Project, an innovative venture in dementia respite care, will be launched by the Honorable Ged Kearney MP, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Professor Rufus Black, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, and Marie Alford, Head of Dementia Support Australia.
This project represents a partnership between the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre and Dementia Support Australia (DSA), with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. The official launch of the DREAM Project is scheduled for Tuesday, 30 July 2024, at 9:00 am.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: YOUR RIGHTS, YOUR CHOICE
Food was one of the top 5 care/service delivery issues* raised with OPAN advocates in the last financial year by older people living in residential aged care. In this webinar, our panel of experts, including culinary icon Maggie Beer, Food, Nutrition and Dining Unit Director Jessica Zilujko and National Older Persons Reference Group members Rosemary Seam and Danijela Hlis, will discuss challenges and solutions.

MENTAL HEALTH IN AGED CARE
Mental distress and mental health conditions are common in late life, and older adults with a mental health condition are more likely to experience disability and reduced quality of life.
This web report provides a snapshot of what is known about the mental health needs of individuals at the time of assessment for aged care services (that is, prior to, or at, entry to care) and of deaths due to suicide while accessing aged care, using linked data from the National Aged Care Data Clearinghouse and the National Death Index.
Key findings
- Just under 1 in 4 people that received a home care package was recorded with a mental health condition
- About 58% of people (a higher rate than in the general population of older adults) entering residential aged care are recorded with a mental health condition
- Death by suicide is more common among people using home care packages than among those living in residential aged care
- Mental health conditions are less commonly recorded for aged care users with increasing age

FACTSHEET – PORTABLE LONG SERVICE LEAVE
Last month, NSW Parliament passed legislation to establish a Portable Long Service Leave Schem for the community services sector. The scheme will start on July 1, 2025. The NSW Government will be providing education and awareness raising activities in the lead up to this date.

HELP SHAPE THE NATIONAL CARERS STRATEGY
The Department of Social Services (DSS) wants to hear from carers across Australia to help inform the National Carers Strategy.
The National Carers Strategy will recognise the contribution of Australia’s carers and provide guidance on how to better support their social and economic participation.
Consultations will be held across Australia in August-September 2024, with in-person and virtual options available. Sessions will be approximately three hours in duration, with refreshments provided. Participants will be reimbursed for their time.
In NSW, the following in-person consultations are scheduled to take place:
- Dubbo, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 (12pm – 3pm)
- Sydney, Thursday, 29 August 2024 (10am – 1pm)
- Sydney, Thursday, 5 September 2024 (10am – 1pm)
Carers can also register to attend one of four online sessions. The following virtual consultations are scheduled to take place:
- Friday, 2 August 2024 (10am – 1pm)

LGBTQ+ INCLUSIVE PRACTICE WORKSHOP FOR AGED CARE WORKERS IN CANTERBURY BANKSTOWN

Who: Aged Care workers in Canterbury Bankstown who wish to expand accessibility to ageing clients by providing a safe, LGBTQ+ inclusive space that promotes and delivers exceptional person-centred care.

Clients with diverse genders and sexualities come from all cultures and walks of life. Their lived experiences, as compared to the broad population, require specific considerations to communicate with and care for these populations respectfully, effectively and in a culturally appropriate way.
This comprehensive, full-day training is designed to improve your knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ+ people and communities, addressing common questions including:
- What do LGBTQ+ and different terms for gender and sexuality mean?
- What should I know about the trans community?
- Why is inclusion important?
- What should I know about LGBTQ+ history and relevant current legislation?
- What are the current health priorities for the older LGBTQ+ community?

Pride Training courses are developed and delivered by LGBTQ+ community members and subject matter experts, and include activities, media, open discussions, and access to a range of useful resources.
