Supporting older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access safe, respectful and responsive care

South Western Sydney NSW, is home to the largest population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. Recent Primary Health Network (PHN) data identifies more than 26,000 First Nations people living in the South Western Sydney PHN region.

Did you know? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in South Western Sydney have a younger age profile than non-Aboriginal people in the region.

When planning and delivering services, it is important to consider the broader determinants of health that can impact older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including social, cultural, historical and systemic factors.
Research shows that ongoing disadvantage is associated with an increase in geriatric syndromes at younger ages for Aboriginal people, including early onset dementia, frailty and disability among people aged over 50 years (LoGiudice, 2016).
Social and emotional wellbeing can also be influenced by historical and social determinants, including the Stolen Generations and institutional racism (Dudgeon et al., 2017).

How can services respond?

Services can support older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by:
  • engaging in meaningful community consultation to better understand the wider determinants affecting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • identifying barriers to accessing services linked to the social determinants of health
  • working with communities to address these barriers through flexible, affordable and culturally safe service models
  • embedding co-design principles to ensure services are shaped by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and experiences.
By understanding the broader factors that influence health and wellbeing, services can better support older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access safe, respectful and responsive care.
